Acoustic Emission Testing (AE)

Defects and discontinuities in a material must be detected before they reach a critical size and result in severe damage and expensive corrective actions. With Acoustic Emission Testing (AET) it is possible to locate structural defects and to monitor the material for discontinuities.

The Solution

Acoustic Emission (AE) is a phenomenon, that occurs naturally where external stimuli, such as deformations, corrosion and cracks in a material under stress, generate sound waves.

Acoustic Emission Testing (AET) is an Advanced Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) method that is used to analyze the sound waves emitted, caused by defects or discontinuities in material.

Several sensors are attached to the surface of the material, spaced at intervals of some meters from one another. The information collected by each of the sensors is monitored by a computer. If there is a defect in the material, the signal characteristics of the sensor attached near the discontinuity alters. Valuable information about the origin and severity of a defect in the material can be ascertained by analyzing these signals.

Acoustic Emission Testing provides an increase in sensitivity compared to Conventional Testing Methods and the testing time is shorter than with other NDT methods.
